- Story Text: Protesters rallying to impeach South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol are getting more than moral support - they're getting free coffee and food too. People across the country have been using delivery apps to preorder food and beverages in support of protesters braving freezing temperatures outside Seoul's National Assembly.
Kang Mi-hyun, owner of the Royal Host cafe near parliament, said orders have surged dramatically.
"First, there were orders around 20 cups of hot Americano, and 20 cup of lattes, and 10 egg tarts, but now the basic start line of prepaid orders is 100 drinks, and for this Saturday's rally, 1000 cups of Americano have already been prepaid for,” Kang said.
Social media posts on X share the names of cafes and restaurants that have received preorders, and demonstrators can pick up a free drink or snack by providing the name used for payment. Kang also wheels a trolley to the rally to deliver the beverages in person.
Protester Heo Kang-hu was thankful for the thoughtful beverage and felt supported for attending the rally.
The prepayment system has transformed local businesses into hubs for activism, where each hot beverage and snack has become an expression of political unity.
