- Story Text: A second impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk Yeol was formally submitted to South Korea's parliament on Friday (December 13) after the first attempt to unseat and remove him from office failed.
Yoon survived the first attempt to impeach him last Saturday (December 7) when most of his ruling People Power Party (PPP) boycotted the vote. Since then at least seven PPP members have publicly supported a vote to impeach him.
Yoon made a public statement on Thursday (December 12) defending his short-lived declaration of martial law last week, saying that the move was meant to protect democracy and pledged to fight attempts to impeach him.
Opposition parties, which control the single-chamber parliament, plan to hold the second impeachment vote at 5 p.m. (0800 GMT) on Saturday (December 14). They need at least eight PPP members to pass the bill with the two-third majority required.
