- Story Text:South Korean protesters on Saturday (December 14) applauded and some even burst into tears as President Yoon Suk Yeol was impeached over his short-lived attempt to impose martial law.
A large crowd of anti-Yoon protesters gathered outside the National Assembly in Seoul as they eagerly awaited the results of the second attempt to impeach Yoon, after the first vote was boycotted by his conservative People Power Party (PPP).
The motion was carried after some members of Yoon's PPP joined the opposition parties, which control 192 seats in the 300-member national assembly, clearing the two-thirds threshold needed for impeachment.
The Constitutional Court will decide whether to remove Yoon sometime in the next six months. If he is removed from office, a snap election will be called.
