- Story Text: Pilgrims began arriving for the Hajj pilgrimage in the holy city of Mecca in Saudia Arabia on Thursday (October 27).
The Hajj, whose observance dates according to the Muslim calendar, is expected to peak in the first or second week of November.
The Hajj is essentially a series of rites performed in and near Mecca, the holiest of the three holy cities of Islam - Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem. As one of the five pillars of Islam all believers, if they are financially and physically able, must make this Pilgrimage at least once in their life.
The Hajj must be made between the eighth and the 13th days of the 12th month (called Dhu al-Hijjah) of the Muslim lunar year.
During Hajj, Muslims circumambulate the Kaaba, the most sacred site in Islam, seven times in a counterclockwise direction. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
