- Story Text: Protesting Indian farmers were hit with water cannons and tear gas at the northern Punjab-Haryana border on Saturday (December 14) as police tried to stop them from marching to New Delhi.
The farmers were demanding legal guarantees of more state support for crops and a debt waiver, and said the government must honour a promise to double their incomes.
They had been camping at Shambhu on Punjab's border with neighbouring Haryana state since February, when police halted their march.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government was forced to repeal some farm laws in 2021 after a year-long protest by farmers when they camped outside New Delhi for months.
