PORTUGUESE NAVY COMMANDER ADMIRAL HENRIQUE GOUVEIA E MELO SPEAKING (Portuguese) SCRIPT Türkiye has achieved its first military ship export to a European Union (EU) and NATO member country with the signing on Tuesday, December 17, of a contract for the design and construction of two Offshore Supply and Logistics Support Vessels for the Portuguese Navy. The ships will be built under the leadership of STM Defense Technologies Engineering and Trade Inc. as the prime contractor. STM Defense Technologies Engineering and Trade Inc. has beaten off competition from some of the world's leading naval defense companies to win the Portuguese Navy Logistics Support Ship tender. Under the contract, STM will be the prime contractor for the design and construction of two Offshore Supply and Logistics Support Ships (AOR+) in Türkiye. The signing ceremony for the AOR+ project between Türkiye and Portugal took place in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon. The event was attended by the Head of the Turkish Defense Industries Agency, Prof. Dr. Haluk Gorgun, the Commander of the Portuguese Navy, Admiral Henrique Gouveia e Melo, the President of the Portuguese Defense Industries Agency (IdD), Carlos Felix, the Turkish Ambassador to Portugal, Haldun Koc, the Vice President of the Defense Industries Agency, Prof. Dr. Ihsan Kaya, the Managing Director of STM, Ozgur Guleryuz, as well as representatives from the Portuguese Ministry of Defense and the Portuguese Navy. STM's Managing Director, Ozgur Guleryuz, emphasized that they successfully represent Turkish defense industry on the global stage. He highlighted that while strengthening the Turkish Navy with domestic and national platforms, they have also signed various surface and submarine projects for Ukraine, Malaysia, and Pakistan. Admiral Henrique Gouveia e Melo, Commander of the Portuguese Navy, stated that the main reason behind their partnership with Türkiye was its significant military industry. He said, "Not only in the maritime sector, but also in unmanned systems, there are strong partnerships that can definitely be developed to reach new markets between Türkiye and Portugal, contributing to the economies, technological sovereignty, and the capacities of both allied countries." This agreement marks Türkiye's first export of a military vessel to a European Union (EU) and NATO member country and demonstrates STM's growing importance in the global defense industry. Designed for continuous operations at sea for up to 90 days, the ships will carry 100 operational personnel, plus an additional capacity for 100 embarked personnel. The ships will be able to carry up to 20 light tactical armored vehicles. Primarily focused on anti-air warfare, they will also integrate sensor and weapon systems for all major types of warfare. The ships will be equipped with Close-In Weapon Systems (CIWS), 12.7 mm remotely operated weapon stations and chaff/decoy systems, as well as numerous advanced sensors and systems. In addition, the ships will have helicopter and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platforms with dedicated UAV hangars. Designed as versatile joint logistics support ships, the AOR+ ships will provide both solid and liquid replenishment to surface platforms in peace and war, making them a critical asset for maritime operations.
