- Story Text: The Turkish flag was raised over Turkey's embassy in Damascus after twelve years of closure.
The flag flied over the embassy on Sunday (December 15), a week after Syrian president Bashar al-Assad was ousted and Islamist fighters took control of the country.
The embassy was closed in 2012.
The number of Syrians in Turkey returning to their country will gradually increase as Syria stabilizes, said Turkish Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan.
Fidan also added that the elimination of YPG was Turkey's strategic goal.
The People's Protection Units (YPG) has been a central element of U.S.-allied forces in a coalition against Islamic State militants. Turkey says the YPG is a terrorist group, closely tied to Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militants who have fought the Turkish state for 40 years.
