Ammar Selmo, a member of the Syrian Civil Defense's Executive Board, explained to Anadolu that the warehouse was initially suspected to be a drug storage facility. However, it was revealed to have been used to store decaying bodies and skeletons. The team is meticulously documenting the remains to ascertain the number of victims and will conduct DNA tests to help identify them. The Sayyidah Zaynab area had served as a headquarters for an Iranian militia before the fall of the regime. "We don’t know where these people were detained or how they died," Selmo stated, underscoring the mystery surrounding the circumstances of the deaths. Bashar Assad, Syria’s leader for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia after anti-regime groups took control of Damascus on Dec. 8, ending the Baath Party regime, which had been in power since 1963.
