- Story Text: Foreign ministers and delegates from the Gulf Cooperation Council were gathering on Saturday (December 18) for a summit meeting that's expected to renew calls for Syria to abide by an Arab League peace plan.
Speaking ahead of the GCC meeting, Omani Foreign Minister Youssef bin Alawi bin Abdullah said on Sunday he was optimistic Syria will sign the peace plan, to end the violent crackdown on anti-government protests before an Arab League meeting later this week.
A committee of Arab foreign ministers on Syria said on Saturday (December 17) Arab states may take their proposals for ending Damascus's crackdown on protests to the U.N. Security Council next week unless the Arab country agreed to implement the initiative.
A GCC effort to bring about a peaceful power transition in Yemen received a boost as the summit meeting got underway.
A Yemeni dissident army general said on Sunday he backed the GCC peace accord signed last month, lending support to efforts to pull Yemen from the brink of civil war.
General Ali Mohsen's announcement came one day after both his forces, and troops loyal to outgoing President Ali Abdullah Saleh, began withdrawing from the capital Sanaa as part of the Gulf-brokered deal.
Among the issues due to be discussed by GCC ministers was whether to back a controversial new port planned on Kuwait's maritime border with Iraq, that has left many politicians in Iraq complaining it harms their ports in Basra. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
