- Story Text: The cast of the new film “The Brutalist” are giving their director Brady Corbet all the credit when it comes to the praise for the movie.
“He's a special filmmaker because he focuses on really on sort of psychology and behavior and those things that we as actors are genuinely interested in. So, so it was a real treat from start to finish,” said co-star Guy Pearce.
"The Brutalist" is an epic tale of a Hungarian immigrant who flees the horrors of World War Two to rebuild his life in the United States, and stars Oscar-winner Brody in the leading role of Laszlo Toth, an architect.
Brody, who had read the script nearly six years ago, expressed his deep connection to the story and his character through both his mother and grandfather.
“Her journey as an artist, her pursuits as an artist are deeply profound and linked to this and how the past influences an understanding of an artist and the yearnings and how the importance of leaving behind something of great meaning is enhanced by loss and an understanding of hardship … my grandfather's struggle with language and assimilating and being a foreigner and not getting the work or respect that he deserved that was lost and taken from him by having to flee war at home resonates with me in addition to a dialect and a specificity in mannerisms,” said Brody.
For actress Felicity Jones, who portrays Broady’s wife in the film, one of the most compelling aspects of the film are its characters and unique storytelling style.
“These characters, particularly Laszlo and Erzsebet, you know, they're doing everything they can to, to preserve their integrity and their and their self-worth. And, and I think to have a film that has this immense storytelling, but also does it in an unusual kind of almost quite punky way is so, so unexpected.”
Brody was recently nominated for a Golden Globe and is receiving Oscar buzz. When asked if he considered the role a "comeback" as many have reported, he said: “in order to do work on this level, you need all of those to conspire with you and not against you. And I have worked on many things that I am very grateful for. And, and this film has some specific weight and power to it that is resonating more than, than others.”
"The Brutalist", which runs at a meaty 215 minutes and comes with a 10-minute interval, was co-written with Corbet's wife, Mona Fastvold. It was a hit at the Venice International Film Festival earlier this year, with Corbet winning the best director prize.
The movie hits cinemas on December 20 in the United States.
