The second reason is the evaluation that is being introduced into public services, we believe that this evaluation is not appropriate and cannot be implemented in education, that it will actually be very harmful, and these are the basic reasons for this protest." - Story Text: Croatia's Independent Union of Secondary School Employees on Saturday (December 14) joined the wage increase protests initiated by the Science Union and the Preporod School Union in Croatia's capital, Zagreb.
The protesters were demanding higher salaries and protesting the introduction of evaluations of public services which would include those employed in education sectors.
In a speech addressing protesters, the president of the Preporod School Union, Zeljko Stipic said evaluations in educational and scientific institutions were 'out of question'.
Jelena Knezevic, who worked as an English teacher for 19 years, said she is wondering "who among the young new workforce will want to come and work at the school, let alone who will stay.”
