DRONE SHOT OF COAST SCRIPT After experiencing its longest stretch without sunshine in 31 years, the Netherlands finally saw the sun return on Thursday. Footage from Friday, Dec. 20, shows ships pass by the coast, while people ride bikes and spend time walking in the Rotterdam. For 10 consecutive days, overcast skies and gloomy weather gripped the country, plunging it into relentless darkness. This sunless spell, which began on Dec. 9, was the longest since 1993, though it fell short of the record 14-day streak set in 1959. Adding to the unusual weather pattern, forecasts predict an unseasonably warm Christmas this year. Daytime temperatures are expected to rise to 14°C, well above the typical near-freezing levels, according to Weeronline. This could make it one of the warmest Christmases on record, rivaling the 2015 high of 14°C at the De Bilt weather station, the site of official meteorological records. Nighttime temperatures are also forecast to remain mild at around 10°C, a significant departure from the usual winter lows of around 0°C. While this year’s Christmas is set to be grey and green, with light rain and mild conditions, Weeronline noted a slight chance of temperatures returning closer to seasonal norms. The forecast also suggests brief moments of sunshine on Tuesday and Thursday, offering a small reprieve before more unsettled weather returns. The reappearance of the sun is a welcome change after over a week of dreariness. However, strong winds and mild temperatures may dampen the festive atmosphere as the Netherlands heads into the holiday season.
