VARIOUS OF PEOPLE MARCHING SCRIPT Druze people living in Syria's capital, Damascus, held an absentee funeral prayer on Saturday, Dec. 21, for their relatives, who were found to have died in Sednaya Prison. After the fall of the Assad regime in Syria, Druze groups learned from official documents seized from Sednaya, which was considered one of the regime's torture centers, that their relatives had died in the prison. The group gathered in the Cereme settlement area. Carrying photos of their loved ones, the crowd held a symbolic funeral ceremony for those who died in Sednaya. The group also staged a protest. During the era of the fallen Ba'ath regime, tens of thousands of people were tortured for years in prisons under the Ministry of Defense. Among these prisons, thousands of individuals detained by regime officials in Sednaya, located in Damascus, died as a result of systematic torture. A 2017 report by Amnesty International called Sednaya a "slaughterhouse," documenting abuse against detainees, including rape, torture, and executions. Bashar Assad, who ruled Syria for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia on Dec. 8 after anti-regime groups seized control of Damascus. The takeover followed a swift, two-week offensive by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) fighters, who captured key cities across the country.
