- Story Text: The Chinese territory of Macau is set to celebrate the former Portuguese colony's 25-year anniversary of its handover to Chinese rule on Friday (December 20).
Macau was returned to China at midnight on Dec. 19, 1999, ending almost 450 years of Portuguese rule.
Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled to visit Macau for three days from Thursday (December 18) to attend the General Assembly in celebration of the 25th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland and the inauguration ceremony of the sixth government.
Sam Hou Fai, 62, a former judge born in Zhongshan city in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong, was elected the sixth chief executive-designate in October 2024.
