- Story Text: Islamic scholars from around the world gathered in Riyadh to attend a five day conference in Koranic studies.
The event kicked off with a Koranic recitation and a welcome greeting from a spokesman from the King Saud University.
The university has invited academics and scholars to discuss their research in to Koranic studies and to present papers on a number of topics.
Saleh Bin Humayed is one of the professors, "The holy Koran is the spirit of this nation and the source of its pride and it enhances every Muslim, who is measured by how close he is to it, by how much care he takes in reading it and learning from it and working with it. The faith of a Muslim believer is measured by his sincerity, closeness and fairness to God," said Hamed.
Saudi Arabia, seen as the birthplace of Islam is also home to two of Islam's holiest sites, with the country's King being the custodian of the Two Holy Mosques in Makkah and Medina.
But the country is also home to hundreds of Koranic schools, and one of the world's largest printing presses for the Holy Koran is in Medina.
One of the main organisers of the event hailed the importance of studying the Koran and how to interpret the holy text.
"The importance of the International Conference on Koranic studies lies in drawing the attention of researchers inside and outside the Kingdom to the need to develop Koranic studies and it is in real need of development and innovation. Also, to make specialists in koranic studies around the world aware that they need to keep up with the times and develop their educational styles in delivering the information, so that we can introduce the holy Koran to other nations properly and in a way that suits Islam and the Koran and those countries," said Abdulrahman Al-Shehri.
He also added that this is event a historic moment for the country, "This conference is one of the greatest and largest conferences held in the Arab world in the past few centuries in the service of the holy Koran and its sciences. This conference, in terms of its theme, 'the development of Koranic studies' - no conference has even been held before on this topic," said Al-Shehri.
Those attending the conference will be able to attend a number of lectures on scientific research and technological developments in research techniques related to the religious text.
