- Story Text:German Chancellor Olaf Scholz laid flowers at a church door after visiting the scene of a car-ramming attack in the German city of Magdeburg on Saturday (December 21) that left at least 5 people dead.
The State premier Haseloff, who paid tribute to the victims with Scholz, said on Saturday that more than 200 people were injured, many of them seriously, when a man drove his car in the Christmas market on Friday night.
Scholz said it was a "terrible act" and that he was worried about those who were critically injured.
Police said they arrested a 50-year-old doctor from Saudi Arabia, the suspected driver of the car, who has been living in Germany for almost two decades. Police did not name the man.
Der Spiegel reported that the suspect had sympathised with the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. The magazine did not say where it got the information.
Germany's domestic intelligence agency declined to comment on the ongoing investigation.
