- Story Text: A convoy of 45 trucks left the Saudi Arabian capital Riyadh for Jordan on Tuesday evening, (Sep 24) carrying 200 tons of food and medical supplies for Syrian refugees in camps along the border between the two countries.
More than two million refugees have left Syria since the outbreak of civil war in 2011, a United Nations agency said this month, while another 4.25 million are displaced inside the country.
The humanitarian aid was sent by a national Saudi campaign funded by government and private donations to bring relief to those who have fled the war-torn country. Saudi field teams have been working in the refugee camps to carry out needs assessments.
"The National Campaign to support our Syrian brothers completes its first year today. It has set up ??more than 60 programmers and humanitarian projects for the Syrian people, whether in Jordan, Lebanon or Turkey at a total cost of 429 million riyals ($114 million)," said Mobarak Al-Baker, Executive Director of the campaign.
Senior officials and members of the ruling al-Saud family attended the departure, including Prince Turki bin Talal bin Abdulaziz al-Saud, a nephew of King Abdullah, who is the official supervisor of the national campaign.
"We want to walk in the footsteps of the founder (the kingdom's founder, King Abdul Aziz), preferring to give to others rather than to give to ourselves. This is the plan and this is the goal outlined by our leader, (King Abdullah) the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, when he ordered the establishment of a national campaign to support our Syrian brother, an effort for which all the people participated, "Prince Turki bin Talal Al-Saud said before the convoy got underway.
The trucks left Riyadh, bearing the slogan "Respond to the appeal", on the evening following Saudi Arabia's National Day. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
