- Story Text: Around a hundred migrants arrived in Guatemala City on Friday (December 27) on the latest of five deportation flights of 2024 sent by the United States, authorities said.
The deportees, a vast majority who were Guatemalan, arrived from U.S. cities such as El Paso and were registered at a returnee center before being released.
More than 70,500 Guatemalans have been returned to their country from January 2024 up until Thursday (December 26), according to Guatemalan Migration Institute's Undersecretary Elmer Jose Pinzon.
Reuters exclusively reported on Thursday that Guatemala is open to receiving citizens of other Central American nations who are deported from the United States, according to three sources familiar with the matter. It is a signal that the center-left government of President Bernardo Arevalo wants to start on smooth terms with Trump, who will be inaugurated on January 20, 2025.
