- Story Text: Dear friends of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter are sharing their sincere gratitude for the impact he had on their lives, after the 100-year-old passed away at his home in Plains, Georgia, on Sunday (December 29).
During his term, Carter struggled with a bad economy and the Iran hostage crisis, but he brokered a peace deal between Israel and Egypt, and later received the Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian work.
"Legacy of service, that's what he and Rosalynn both lived for," said Jill Stuckey, Superintendent of the Jimmy Carter National Historical Park in Plains, Georgia. "They wanted to live as long as they possibly could to help as many people as they possibly could and and they did it."
Stuckey has been a friend to the Carter family ever since she met them 30 years ago during the 1994 Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington D.C.
After sharing countless meals and laughs with President Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, Stuckey is grateful she got to spend so much time with her heroes.
"I am one of the luckiest people in the world," Stuckey said. "I got to spend 30 years with my heroes, and I love them more today than the first day I met them."
