- Story Text:Indian farmer leader, Jagjit Singh Dallewal, vowed to continue his indefinite hunger strike over unmet demands, supporting farmers camping at the Punjab-Haryana border said on Monday (December 30).
Farmers in the breadbasket states of Punjab and Haryana have been staging massive demonstrations demanding the government to double their incomes, with legal guarantees on more state support prices for crops.
Despite his worsening health conditions, Dallewal has continued to stay on a hunger strike for more than a month. The farmers had also called for a complete shutdown, demanding the closure of all commercial establishments in northern Punjab state on Monday (December 30).
The Punjabi farmers have been camped at Shambhu and Khanauri on Punjab's border with neighbouring Haryana state since February. The farmers have previously staged tractor rallies and occupied railway tracks to protest when the Indian security forces halted their march.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government was forced to repeal some farm laws in 2021 after a year-long protest by farmers when they camped outside Delhi for months. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
