- Story Text: Linda Lavin, star of television sitcom "Alice" and a Tony winner, died on Sunday (December 29), aged 87.
Her publicist told Reuters on Monday that she passed "unexpectedly due to complications from recently discovered lung cancer."
Born in Portland, Maine, United States, Lavin starred as Phoenix diner worker and aspiring singer Alice Hyatt in CBS sitcom "Alice" that was adapted from filmmaker Martin Scorsese's 1974 movie "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore", and aired from 1976 to 1985.
In 1979 and 1980 Lavin won the best actress in a television series (comedy or musical) Golden Globe for the role. She was also nominated for an Emmy in 1979 for "Alice".
Neil Simon's semi-autobiographical play "Broadway Bound" premiered on Broadway on October 6, 1986 and ran until September 25, 1988. It was the final chapter in the playwright's "Eugene" trilogy that saw Lavin play Kate Jerome, a strong mother figure to two boys, including Eugene (Jonathan Silverman). She won the best actress Tony for the part in 1987, having been Tony-nominated six times from 1970 to 2012.
Lavin was also inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 2011.
In recent years, Lavin starred in filmmaker Aaron Sorkin's "Being the Ricardos" in 2021, a biopic about Lavin's real-life friend, actor and comedian Lucille Ball and her then husband Desi Arnaz, played in the film by Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem respectively.
This year Lavin also starred opposite "Friends" star Lisa Kudrow in three episodes of Netflix's dark comedy TV series "No Good Deed", and attended its Hollywood premiere on December 4.
According to entertainment website Variety, Lavin was to appear alongside actors Matt Bomer and Nathan Lane in upcoming Hulu comedy "Mid-Century Modern" and was in the midst of filming its first season.
Lavin is survived by third husband, actor Steve Bakunas.
