- Story Text: The GCC foreign ministers held the 130th ordinary session at the GCC general headquarters in Riyadh on Tuesday (March 4) under the chairmanship of Kuwaiti Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Khalid Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, with participation of GCC Secretary General Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al-Zayani.
Sabah called on the international community to take action over the worsening crisis in Syria.
"We find ourselves in front of a painful situation in Syria as a result of the constant bloodletting which has been going on for the third year in a row, and the escalating cycle of violence and the deterioration and worsening of the humanitarian situation inside and outside Syria, which puts the whole world in front of a huge challenge requiring rapid intervention from the United Nations and the international community through the UN Security Council, so as to take the necessary and deterrent action in order to protect civilians and their lives, and to bring the perpetrators of these crimes to the International Criminal Court," he said.
The chairman also expressed satisfaction with apparent progress made in talks in Geneva in January between the European Union and Iran in resolving outstanding differences on how to implement a landmark nuclear deal.
"I would like to express the Gulf Cooperation Council's satisfaction with the preliminary findings, and the agreement concluded between the (5 +1) group and the Islamic Republic of Iran in Geneva on Iran's nuclear programme, hoping that it will create a comprehensive solution, stressing the importance of Iran's commitment to full cooperation with the IAEA International Atomic Energy Agency."
The ministers reviewed a number of reports submitted by the Secretariat General regarding the decisions of the supreme council at the GCC Kuwait Summit in December where Gulf Arab states welcomed Iran's "new direction" under President Hassan Rouhani, but said the Islamic Republic should do more to promote stability in a region that has long viewed it with mistrust. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
