- Story Text: Around 200 giant theatre puppets and scarecrows took part in a parade on Tuesday (December 31) “Celebrating Cambodia” before ringing in the New Year 2025.
The Parade began after sunset with approximately 3,000 participants, starting from the corner of 144th Street and Sisowath Street to the gardens in front of the Royal Palace.
The Cambodian Pride Parade includes cultural performances, parades or sports with costumes and body decorations, along with creative parade floats, balloons and decorations or ornaments with colour, technology and light, as well as displays of artistic talent or creativity with collaboration between institutions sand groups.
Thought to be the first time for such an event, organiser Union Youth Federation of Cambodia hopes this celebration will bring in good luck and for the people to enjoy peace despite difficult economic times.
Scarecrows are generally used by villagers and farmers at the rice paddies to keep birds from eating the seeds and scare the evil spirits, as well as deter diseases from houses.
This vibrant procession symbolises Cambodia’s unity and pride, with participants showcasing the nation’s rich cultural heritage.
