- Story Text: France's newly appointed ministers met at the Elysee Palace for the first cabinet meeting headed by Prime Minister Francois Bayrou on Friday (January 3) with a keen eye on reducing the country's deficit.
Bayrou was appointed France's prime minister last month after the fall of Michel Barnier's government in an ensuing political crisis.
One of the new government's priorities is to reduce the public deficit, government spokesperson Sophie Primas said at a press briefing after the meeting.
The previous government had said it was counting on a public deficit of 5% of gross domestic product (GDP) for this year, but the new cabinet did not want to specify the new target rate. France in 2024 had a deficit of 6.1% of the GDP.
