- Story Text: Bolivian Roman Catholics celebrated Epiphany by attending church with figurines of baby Jesus for a traditional blessing on Monday (January 6).
The participants, donning these dolls in satin and gold-embroidered clothing, gathered at the historic San Francisco Church in La Paz.
Parishioners presented the figurines at the altar in white baskets, similar to cradles, during the Mass.
As they exited the church holding the baskets, altar boys sprinkled holy water to bless the dolls. Outside the church Yatiri indigenous spiritual leaders also performed blessings on the dolls using incense.
Many of these cherished dolls have been passed down through generations within families, with believers attributing the fulfilment of their prayers to them.
The feast of Epiphany, also known as the Three Kings' Day, is a celebration marking the visit of the three Magi to the infant Jesus.
