- Story Text: Orthodox Christian believers jumped into the chilly waters of Istanbul's Golden Horn on Monday (January 6) to mark Epiphany Day, one of the most important celebrations of the Orthodox religion.
The swimmers tried to retrieve a wooden cross, which is thrown into the water by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, the spiritual leader of the world's Orthodox Christians, as part of the ritual commemorating the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River.
Hundreds of people from different countries attended the traditional Epiphany service at the Patriarchal Church of St. George and then waited on the shore of the Golden Horn for the swimmers. The cross, which is blessed by the priest, is believed to bring good luck for the year to those who retrieve it from the water.
The weather was sunny in Istanbul and the water temperature in the area was around 11 degrees Celsius, according to the Turkey's state meteorological service.
Vasilis Konstantinidis, who came to Istanbul from Drama, Greece for the ritual, was the first to reach the cross in the water. He said he participates in the ritual in different places every year, including Drama and Thessaloniki, and added that this was the sixth time he caught the cross first.
"We actually do this every every year in a different city and Vasilis is always winning, getting the cross," said his friend, Panagiotis Papaemmanouil, who was also swam on Monday.
