- Story Text: A group of Saudi Arabian artists opened a private exhibition in the capital Riyadh over the weekend.
The event was the brainchild of Saudi painter Saad al-Obaid who brought together colleagues from the kingdom and neighbouring countries via mobile messaging service WhatsApp.
"The idea of establishing this [Whats App] group came almost a year ago and was to include a group of Saudi artists. There was a response from colleagues from around the kingdom and some Arab countries. We met more than once to activate this group and agreed to establish an annual exhibition each January," he said.
The rare event in a city which has no dedicated art galleries was organised at a private house.
Saudi artist Awatif Al-Keneibet said she hosted the show to support other artists.
"There was a suggestion by members of the group to organise an art exhibition and it was my pleasure to host it in my house and receive the art works and artists. I'm offering my house for the exhibition as a contribution from me to support art and artists," she said.
A total of 16 artists are taking part in the exhibition. Among them is Ibrahim al-Fassam.
"I now specialise in art that draws inspiration from the artefacts of the Arabian Peninsula and can be enjoyed by all segments of society," he said.
Visitors seemed impressed by the paintings and sculpture on display.
"I think it's a successful group of paintings. I like the relationship between the paintings -- that they are communicating. I can't stop looking. I am finding relationships that are really interesting," said Julianne Ingles, a teacher at Prince Nourah University in Riyadh.
One visitor was impressed that the organiser is a woman.
"The organiser of this exhibition is a Saudi woman. I have come to participate in it and give my opinion as a Saudi woman," said Badrieh, who did not give her family name.
The gallery does not charge artists to exhibit their work and has no entrance fee.
The exhibition runs till the end of the month. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
