- Story Text: Gulf Arab foreign ministers on Saturday (February 14) met in what was called an "extraordinary" meeting in the Saudi capital Riyadh, calling on the international community to take action on Yemen.
Top oil exporter Saudi Arabia along with other members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) have accused the Shia Muslim Houthis of staging a coup after they announced they were dissolving parliament and forming a new government last week.
Yemen has been in political limbo since the president and prime minister resigned last month after the Houthis seized the presidential palace.
Speaking at an emergency meeting in the Saudi capital Riyadh, ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council called on the world to take action to put an end to the illegal action that has been taken in Yemen
"We need the international community, especially the Security Council not to hesitate in taking action and the necessary decisions and put an end to the illegal actions that have been taken in Yemen (by Houthis) and work on implementation of the will of the Yemeni people, according to the Gulf initiative and its mechanisms and the outputs of the National Dialogue," said Qatar's foreign minister Khalid Bin Mohammad Al-Attiyah said during the opening session.
Saudi Arabia has joined Western states in evacuating staff from Yemen after a power grab by Houthi militia there, a move reflecting the hostility of majority Sunni Muslim neighbours toward the Iranian-backed Houthis.
Riyadh has suspended all work at its embassy in Yemen and evacuated its staff "due to the deterioration of the security and political situation," state news agency SPA reported on Friday (February 13), citing an official at the foreign ministry. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
