- Story Text: Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Fahd Ion Abdulaziz arrived in paris on Monday (21 July) for three days of talks with French leaders. The Crown Prince, who serves as First Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister, was greeted at the airport by French Prime Minister Jacques Chirac.
France is believed to be interested in securing a long term contract for the purchase of oil from Saudi Arabia, but following his talks with French President Valery Giscard d'Estaing on Tuesday, Prince Fahd declined to substantiate reports that the amount being sought by France was 150 million tonnes over a ten year period. He said specific figures had not been discussed. France now buys about one third of its oil from Saudi Arabia.
He said that they discussed many areas of common concern with france including arms, oil and the Middle East.
The reference to arms meant that he had discussed an ambitious Arab project for the development of an aircraft and missile manufacturing industry in Egypt backed by Arab oil revenues and intended to serve Arab states. He refused to confirm reports that his country was negotiating an arms contract with France worth 1 billion U.S. dollars ( 450 million pounds sterling). French officials say those reports, which originated in the Middle East, probably refer to the armaments development plans in Egypt.
The prince is expected to complete his visit on Wednesday.
