  • Story Text: New Orleans began its carnival season with the Joan of Arc Parade on Monday (January 06), just days after a U.S. Army veteran killed 14 people and injured dozens by ramming a truck into a crowd of revelers on New Year's Day.
    Crowds gathered on Bourbon Street to honor victims and celebrate the city’s resilience. Memorials near the parade route included flowers and candles for those lost in the tragedy.
    "This is a city that has always celebrated," said local Danielle Smith. "So I think we have to honor people that left this world in such a tragic way as continuing to go forward."
    The parade, marking the start of Mardi Gras season and honoring the birthday of Joan of Arc, featured costumed performers, music, and the iconic Joan of Arc statue, symbolizing courage and renewal.
    Residents like Guy LaMoth emphasized the city’s determination to move forward. "We are a resilient people, a resilient city...We have overcome tragedies and maladies for hundreds of years."
    Despite recent events, the city remains committed to its traditions and vibrant culture.
