- Story Text: Saudi Arabia's King Khalid received an enthusiastic welcome from thousand of cheering Egyptians on his arrival in Cairo on Wednesday (16 July).
The new monarch was on his first visit ???road since succeeding his assassinated brother, ??? last March. He was in Egypt for a five-day visit for important political, economic and military talks with President Anwar Sadat.
A major topic in their talks was expected to concern the Arab plan of action. This follows Egypt's decision not to renew the mandate of the United Nations Emergency Forces (UNEF) in the Sinai -- due to expire on 24 July -- unless the United Nations pushes Israel towards a peace agreement.
King Khalid was given a welcome at Cairo Airport reminiscent of that accorded the late King Faisal when he visited Egypt almost a year ago.
Apart from the traditional respect for Saudi monarchs as guardians of Islam's holy shrines the Egyptians also appreciate considerable finance, economic and military aid from Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia's political support for Egypt's approach on a peaceful settlement of the Middle East crises has been a significant factor in rallying support from many Arab countries for this policy.
