- Story Text: Within two hours of his arrival in the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh, Dr. Henry Kissinger began talks with King Faisal and Saudi government officials on Friday (14 December).
Accompanied by U.S. Middle Eastern affairs expert Joseph Sisco, and the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Dr. Mahmoud Riad, the Secretary of State discussed plans and prospects for the forthcoming Geneva Peace Conference with the Saudi Arabians.
Another question thought to be high on the U.S. Secretary of State's agenda was the possibility of a relaxation of the Arab oil producers' embargo. The United States, along with the Netherlands, is presently subject to a total Arab oil embargo.
Before boarding his aircraft bound for Damascus, Dr. Kissinger told reporters he had delivered a message from President Nixon to King Faisal. He described the talks as having been "full, frank and constructive" adding, "but at every meeting there was also a growth in the understanding of each other's problems."
In an airport statement, Saudi Arabia's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Omar Sakkaf, said Dr. Kissinger's visit had "helped a lot because wee both, the Saudi people and the American people, want to be friends and we mean to work for this." He went on to say that although the two countries differed on many things, "we think that we are able to remove every stumbling block in our way."
