- Story Text: Saudi Arabia's foreign minister, Prince Saud al-Faisal,
on a visit to Pakistan, has had talks in Islamabad with
President Musharraf as part of efforts to build a united
Muslim coalition in the global war on terrorism.
Hundreds of students have gathered in the city to protest
against America and its attacks over Afghanistan. They also
criticised Musharraf's government and other Muslim countries
for supporting the United States.
Prince Saud al-Faisal met Pakistan leader Pervez
Musharraf in Islamabad on Thursday (October 25).
According to a Saudi source, Saudi Arabia is playing a
role in coordinating policy with Egypt, Jordan, Syria and
other key Muslim countries.
"As far as the present crisis is concerned, we did discuss
he Afghan situation in its totality and there is, let me say,
total unanimity of views on how to approach the problem and
its consequences", Musharraf told reporters after the meeting.
"Solidarity with Pakistan is, I think, the duty of every
Muslim, particularly at this critical hour," Al-Faisal added.
The United States blames Saudi-born fugitive Osama bin
Laden for the September 11 suicide plane attacks on Washington
and New York and has launched military raids on Afghanistan to
punish the ruling Taliban for harbouring him and his
followers.
Saudi Arabia, birthplace of Islam, has voiced support for
global efforts to fight terrorism, but has not allowed the
United States to launch attacks on Muslim Afghanistan from its
soil.
The kingdom and Egypt, key U.S. allies, have come under
strong attack in the American media and have been criticised
by influential U.S. politicians for being too soft on
terrorism.
In Islamabad on Thursday, hundreds of students protested
against America and its attacks over Afghanistan. They also
criticised Pakistan's government and other Muslim countries
for supporting the United States.
The students gathered on buses outside the Faisal mosque.
Brandishing anti-U.S. placards and posters of Osama bin
Laden, they chanted slogans against America and Great Britain.
"We've come here to protest against the terrorist attacks
of Americans on Kabul, Kandahar and other civilian people who
are also in Afghanistan, and we are also protesting against
the government of Pakistan and other Muslims who support America
and the British government against our Muslim brothers,
Afghans," said one of the students, Khalid Hamdani Mehmood.
The demonstration was organised by the Islami Jamiat
Talba, (IJT), a vocal student organisation that enjoys some
support across Pakistan.
