- Story Text: Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Fahd talked with Egypt's President Anwar Sadat on Thursday (3 December) -- the first day of a two day official visit which observers believe could be an attempt to heal inter-Arab differences.
Syrian-Egyptian relations have been strained since last September's interim peace agreement between Egypt and Israel. The Syrians have no interim peace with Israel at the moment and they criticised the Egyptian agreement.
Saudi Arabia, which provided aid to both Egypt and Syria during the 1973 Arab-Israeli war, is thought to be anxious to narrow the gap between the two countries.
Observers believe that Prince Fahd, who is his country's Deputy Prime Minister, is hoping that Arab parties at the Geneva Middle East peace conference should broadly agree.
The Prince's talks with President Sadat were also expected to have touched on Saudi financial aid to Egypt and possible Saudi financing of an Egyptian arms deal. Egypt is reported to be contemplating the purchase of Anglo-French Jaguar warplanes.
Egypt's Vice President Hosni Mubarak met Prince Fahd at the airport and attended the talks with President Sadat.
