- Story Text: Lead actor Claes Bang and director and screenwriter Nick Hamm were among cast and crew attending the premiere for the blockbuster movie "William Tell", a historical drama based on the play of the same name by Friedrich Schiller.
Bang was joined in London's Ham Yard Hotel by co-stars, Connor Swindells, Jonah Hauer-King, Ellie Bamber and Emily Beecham.
The story tells of a medieval folk hero Tell, who is drawn into rebelling against the tyrannical Austrian Habsburg Family dynasty in the 14th Century.
Tell is punished by the evil Austrian Viceroy Gessler, played by "Sex Education's" Connor Swindells, in the famed scene where Gessler orders Tell to shoot an apple from his son's head for refusing to bend the knee to Austrian authority.
"Well, it's a scene I think will last for a long time, what we've done. It's the centrepiece of the movie, it's the beating heart of the film. It's why people are going to go to the movies because they want to say, okay, hold on. Everyone knows something happened with an apple and a guy on a head and blah, blah, blah. But nobody really knows why or what or how," said director Nick Hamm.
Tell subsequently joins the resistance and the story culminates in him leading the fight against and quell the Austrian forces.
"It's at the core of a massive freedom fight with these people that are defending their country from the Austrians that are trying to take it over. And then it, of course, became something much, much bigger and much more. Because you have that whole dilemma moved into one character, into one situation. So, yes, it was very important to get it right," said lead actor Claes Bang.
"William Tell" hits cinemas on Friday (January 17).
