- Story Text: The U.S. military is preparing to deploy additional assets to support efforts to contain firefighting efforts in Southern California, a Pentagon spokesperson said on Friday (January 10) after wildfires devastated Los Angeles neighborhoods on the east and west sides of the sprawling metropolis, killing 10 people and destroying nearly 10,000 structures.
With National Guard personnel and other aerial support already deployed, 500 active-duty personnel and 10 Navy helicopters are among the assets available should California state officials request them, Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh told reporters.
A pause in the fierce winds that super-charged the wildfires this week helped crews make some progress in controlling the infernos on Friday, but strong gusts returning next week could resuscitate the flames.
