- Story Text: U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday (January 8) called the deadly California wildfires that have killed at least five people “a true tragedy” and criticized the state’s governor, Gavin Newsom, for what he said were policies that led to a lack of water to fight the fires.
Speaking alongside Republican leaders at the U.S. Capitol, Trump blamed the state’s conservation policies for the lack of available water.
On Wednesday (January 8), at least three major blazes burned in LA County communities simultaneously, including a fire in the affluent Pacific Palisades neighborhood, an area west of downtown LA dotted with multimillion-dollar celebrity homes built along steep canyons.
Across the county, more than 70,000 people were ordered to evacuate and at least five were left dead as fierce winds fueled the fires, which have burned unimpeded since Tuesday. The fires have destroyed hundreds of buildings.
