- Story Text: “The Brutalist” continued its momentum from its seven-award sweep at this year's Golden Globe awards, including Best Film, as it earned the top prize again at the New York Film Critic Circle Awards on Wednesday (January 8) with the film’s lead Adrien Brody also named best actor.
Other notable awards were Marianne Jean-Baptiste as best actress for her performance in "Hard Truths", while Kieran Culkin and Carol Kane won best supporting actor and best supporting actress respectively, for their roles in "A Real Pain" and "Between the Temples".
The award for best director was given to RaMell Ross for the critically acclaimed film "Nickel Boys," which also won best cinematography, for its director of photography, Jomo Fray.
The film, based off the novel of the same name by Colson Whitehead, follows two African-American boys as they navigate an abusive reform school set in 1960s Florida.
Renowned actors Julia Roberts and FX's “The Bear” star Ayo Edebiri had shared their love for the film on social media, to the delight of Ross and Fray.
“She’s an icon, you know? It’s just really cool. I like took a screenshot and then sent it to every person I know,” said Ross.
“For them to see your work and then on top of that, for them to embrace and celebrate that work, it's like. Yeah, I don't know what's better for artists than to be seen by other artists they respect,” said Fray.
In the category of best screenplay, Sean Baker was recognised for "Anora", which he also directed. Earlier on Wednesday, it was announced that his cast earned a best ensemble nomination for the Screen Actors Guild Awards, set to be presented on Feb. 23.
"I love my cast so much. I cast my own films, so I’m very proud of my casting as well... and it’s really great that their fellow actors are acknowledging them, (it) means everything”, said Baker.
