  • Story Text:Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and local officials commemorated on Wednesday (January 8) the second anniversary of a coup attempt by supporters of former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro.
    The ceremony, held at the presidential palace, one of the buildings vandalized in 2023, included the public display of restored artworks that were damaged during the attack.
    On January 8, 2023, a right-wing crowd protesting an election result stormed and vandalized the Supreme Court, Congress, and the presidential palace in Brasilia.
    The protesters stormed the buildings that symbolize Brazil's democracy a week after Lula had taken office. They rejected his election victory and urged the military to overthrow him.
    About 2,000 people were arrested over the Brasilia attack, though most were later released.
    The Supreme Court has convicted others on charges of an attempted coup, among other crimes, following ongoing police investigations into those who took part in the riots and who fostered or funded the attack.
    Bolsonaro is under investigation by the Supreme Court for allegedly masterminding the riots, something he denies.
