WIDE SHOT OF AREA SCRIPT: On Tuesday, Jan. 14, Anadolu videoed dramatic destruction in the southern Lebanese village of Shamaa, located in the district of Tyre, following the withdrawal of Israeli forces. Local sources indicate that the village sustained significant damage due to the recent military actions in the area. The Israeli military had previously occupied Shamaa last November, as part of its broader offensive in southern Lebanon, which escalated into a full-scale conflict after heightened tensions with Hezbollah. In December, Lebanese troops were deployed to the region after Israeli forces withdrew, in accordance with a ceasefire agreement. The conflict, which began in October 2024, resulted in substantial loss of life, with at least 3,768 Lebanese citizens reported killed during the Israeli military campaign. Additionally, over a million people have been displaced, primarily from southern Lebanon, the Bekaa Valley, and the southern suburbs of Beirut. Shamaa, one of the villages heavily targeted during the conflict, became a focal point of Israeli airstrikes aimed at Hezbollah and Lebanese infrastructure. The village was also the site of a controversial incident involving an alleged Israeli historian, who was killed after entering Shamaa to investigate a shrine, which he claimed was evidence of ancient Jewish heritage in the area.
