- Date: 22nd July 2010
- Summary: NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK, UNITED STATES (JULY 20, 2010) (REUTERS) (SOUNDBITE) (English) DAVID GARRETT, VIOLINIST, SAYING: "Definitely 'Teen Spirit' is one of those pieces where you've got to be very careful because obviously the original is very very strong, a great great piece, an iconic piece and you don't want people to go 'Oh my God. It's just putting the original back,' so you've got to make sure it still has a very strong sense of rock n' roll, but on the other hand, you've got to bring something to the piece."

- Story Text: At first glance, David Garrett doesn't look like your average violinist, but that's probably because he's caught between two worlds.
The 29-year-old German musician picked up the violin at the age of four, falling in love with the beats of classical composers. As a teenager, he later found their relationship to rock rhythms, and so Garrett decided to marry the two.
In his latest album Rock Symphonies, Garrett took the risk of tampering with Nirvana's mega hit, "Smells Like Teen Spirit."
"Teen Spirit is one of those pieces where you've got to be very careful because obviously the original is very very strong, a great great piece, an iconic piece," explains Garrett.
"You don't want people to go 'Oh my God. It's just putting the original back,' so you've got to make sure it still has a very strong sense of rock n' roll, but on the other hand, you've got to bring something to the piece."
If seeing is believing, then it's no wonder why Garrett's become an international phenomenon. Garrett currently holds the Guinness World Record for the most notes played on the violin in one second. For the record, it's 13.
The edgy musician says that his career is not about money or success, but there is one key to keeping his music alive.
"I always try to do something which people don't expect. I think that's the secret of somehow having a longer successful career," says Garrett.
