- Story Text: The European chapter of Harley Davidson bikers paraded across the Rio Antirrio bridge on Saturday (May 22) in a long chain in an attempt to break a previous record.
More than 6,000 bikers crossed the bridge near the city of Patras in Greece, breaking a previous record on a suspended bridge in the United States where more than 2,000 bikes crossed.
The Rio Antirrio bridge is one of the longest, if not the longest, cable stayed bridges with a suspended deck, measuring 2,880 metres, that connects the Peloponnese with central Greece over the Gulf of Corinth.
Greek police escorted the bikers as people gathered on the bridge to watch, which was closed for the crossing to other traffic.
"It was great going across the bridge, it will remain in history." said one biker from Greek Harley Davidson chapter which organized the event.
The European chapter of Harley Davidson enthusiasts hold an annual "Super Rally" in a different European city each year. This year the thousands of bikers chose Patras for their meeting, where they show off their motorcycles and Harley Davidson memorabilia.
Bikers come from every country in Europe, including countries such as Germany, France, Britain and Italy.
"We drove about 1,900 kilometres. We are Germany, Austria, Italy, and the first days there was a little bit bad weather but now its fantastic. I like it!" said one German biker. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
