Residents of Haiti on Thursday (January 9) reminisced on the anniversary of the devastating 2010 earthquake which killed approximately 300,000 people, making it one of the deadliest natural disasters in history.
Alson Dorelus, a survivor who lost a foot, recalled personal tragedies and the ongoing struggle with disability resulting from the disaster.
“Fifteen years later, every time January 12 approaches, I think of my brothers' absence," he said, recounting the deaths of three of his brothers in the family home when the quake struck.
Seismologist and geological engineer Claude Prepetit warned that Haiti's current infrastructure and healthcare systems remain ill-prepared for another catastrophe of a similar scale.
The 2010 earthquake exposed significant vulnerabilities in Haiti's building codes and emergency response capabilities, with many structures collapsing due to inadequate reinforcement.
The anniversary of the earthquake is set against a backdrop of chaos in the capital, where large parts of the city are still held by armed gangs and basic social services are nonexistent.
