- Story Text:Maldives Defence Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon met his Indian counterpart Rajnath Singh and held delegation-level talks on Wednesday (January 08) in New Delhi.
Maumoon began his three-day official visit by paying his respects at the National War Memorial, before being accorded a ceremonial welcome at the presidential palace in the Indian capital.
During the talks, the two ministers reviewed the various facets of bilateral defence cooperation including training, regular exercises, defence projects, workshops and seminars to enhance the capability of the Maldives National Defence Forces as well as supply of defence equipment & stores, as per a statement released by the Indian foreign ministry.
Last year, India extended emergency financial support to Maldives by subscribing to its $50 million treasury bill at the request of Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu.
Maldives-India relations were hurt after Muizzu won power in April 2024, and demanded New Delhi replace 80 defence personnel it had stationed on the Maldives with civilians as part of his "India out" campaign.
The relationship has, however, been on the mend following diplomatic talks and meetings since. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
