- Story Text: Tens of thousands of Hindu devotees and tourists from various parts of the globe gathered in India's northern Prayagraj city to witness the Maha Kumbh Mela or Great Pitcher Festival on Monday (January 13).
Visitors from different countries including Italy, England, Russia, and so on, sought absolution of their sins as they immersed themselves in freezing waters at the confluence of Triveni Sangam river.
"I'm excited but also humbled by this because it is a very profound moment", a visitor from London said.
Held every 12 years, the six-week festival attracts more than 400 million visitors. The festival has its roots in a Hindu tradition that says the god Vishnu wrested a golden pitcher containing the nectar of immortality from demons.
In a 12-day celestial fight for possession, four drops fell to earth, in the cities of Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik, which host the festival every three years by rotation. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
