Actors Billy Crystal and Jennifer Grey are among the celebrities who lost their homes as wildfires raged across Los Angeles.
In a statement on Wednesday (January 8), Crystal and his wife, Janice, said they were “heartbroken” by the loss of their house in the upscale Pacific Palisades area, where they had lived since 1979.
"With the love of children and friends we will get through this," they said.
The largest blaze consumed nearly 12,000 acres (4,856 hectares) in Pacific Palisades, a picturesque neighborhood between the beach towns of Santa Monica and Malibu that is home to many film, television and music stars. A home reportedly belonging to actors Leighton Meester and Adam Brody was among those destroyed.
Actor James Woods broke down in tears during an interview with CNN about losing his Pacific Palisades home.
“One day you’re swimming in the pool and the next day it’s all gone,” he said.
Grey’s daughter Stella Gregg posted on Instagram Stories that the “Dirty Dancing” actress’ house was “burnt to the ground” but that her mother and her dog were safe.
On Thursday morning (January 9), the Hollywood Hills blazed as the worst wildfires in the history of Los Angeles raged, destroying homes and stretching firefighting resources and water supplies to the limit.
More than 100,000 people were ordered to evacuate as dry, hurricane-force winds hindered firefighting operations and spread the fires, which have burned thousands of acres (hectares) since they began on Tuesday (January 7). At least six separate wildfires were burning in Los Angeles County.
Celebrities including, actors Cary Elwes and Cameron Mathison, songwriter Diane Warren and reality TV stars Paris Hilton and Spencer Pratt, took to social media saying they had lost their homes.
“This Is Us” actress Mandy Moore shared footage of the devastation in her Altadena neighbourhood.
“Honestly, I’m in shock and feeling numb for all so many have lost, including my family,” Moore said in an Instagram post. “My children’s school is gone. Our favorite restaurants, leveled. So many friends and loved ones have lost everything too.”
Various media outlets shared pictures of other celebrities’ houses they said had been destroyed in the Pacific Palisades fire, including those belonging to two-time Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins, “Roseanne” and “The Big Lebowski” actor John Goodman, “Top Gun: Maverick” actor Miles Teller and “Scary Movie” star Anna Faris. The actors themselves did not comment publicly.
