- Story Text: 'A bigger picture' of artist David Hockney can currently seen at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne. The new major exhibition by the British artist opened on Friday evening (October 26), being much more then a retrospective of a famous painter.
"When we organised this exhibition originally in London it wasn't a retrospective, it's really a lot of new work and so when the Ludwig museum agreed to take it they weren't quite sure exactly what was going to be in it even. We have also put other things in since it was in London and Spain, so we think it is a better statement here of what we have done actually," Hockney explained to the audience at the opening night in Cologne. The curators in Germany encouraged him to also focus on the aspect of technology in his exhibition, he added. "And Casper and Stephan did encourage me to use the aspect of technology in picture making, which we have done. We swapped a few things, but we think it work very well here, I do, so I like to thank you for doing it really. Right at the end we did put a poster about perspective, so I hope it will get you thinking about it when you leave."
The 74-year old artist has lived in Los Angeles for a great part of his life, where he became most famous for his swimming pool paintings. Still keeping a home overseas, he recently moved back to his native Yorkshire. His recent paintings include many various big-scale landscapes from his home country, which can be seen at the exhibition.
"Hockney directly drafted landscapes and other subjects many times, but also experimented with computers and computer drawing since 20 years. When the iPhone appeared and then following the iPad, he used the medium very naturally to be able to paint more spontaneous and direct," Stephan Diederich, curator at the Ludwig museum explained.
