- Story Text: David Luiz's family came to the Maracana in style to join fans cheering their famous son as he takes on Spain in the Confederations Cup final.
The father and mother of David Luiz led their own demonstration to the Maracana on Sunday (June 30), leading fans signing songs and wearing wigs in tribute to the Brazilian defender ahead of the Confederations Cup final between Brazil and Spain.
Luiz's mother Regina Celia was one of the most enthusiastic, cheering for her 26 year-old son who plays for English club Chelsea.
"He has many fans," she told Reuters, "and he really deserves it and we support him from start to finish."
As for the real demonstrations around the Maracana, the famous mum said she supported those with a cause, but not those who use it for violence.
"We are in favour of the protests, but we want them to be peaceful, and without those groups of people who infiltrate the middle of the crowds so they can cause havoc and destroy things. I am against that."
Brazilian police have mounted a huge security operation outside the Maracana to prevent protests getting out of hand as they have in other stadium cities.
Regina and Luiz's father, Ladislau Marinho, were confident their son will score in the dream final between the current World Cup winners Spain, and the five times champions Brazil.
"David is used to big matches, so I am sure he will finish the match today as a winner, and hopefully with a goal for our supporters," Ladislau said, saying the score would be 2:1 for Brazil.
David's ever-enthusiastic mum was more optimistic of his performance though.
"3-1 for Brazil and David Luiz will score the final goal with a header," she said, before continuing her cheering demonstration in front of the Maracana. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
