- Story Text: Celebrities from the worlds music and film came to
root on photographer David LaChapelle, who made his
directorial debut with the feature film "Rize" in Los
Angeles, California on Tuesday (June 21).
Chapelle is famous for his colourful and sexy photos of
many high profile stars as well as countless music videos
for Hollywood's elite like Christina Aguilera, Madonna,
Jennifer Lopez, Pamela Anderson, Britney Spears, and Gwen
Stefani to name a few.
"Well he is just amazing. I love working with David
(LaChapelle) above other video artists a lot of the time.
Because he is one of the few video artists there are. You
know when it comes to video making he doesn't try and stick
to the same old . With all my videos we pushed the
envelope. These amazing dancers weren't just in "Dirrty"
they were also in "Can't Hold Us Down" we have a little
history so it has been nice," Aguilera said as she walked
the red carpet with LaChapelle.
The documentary film brings to light a revolutionary
form of artistic dance expression borne from the streets of
South Central, Los Angeles.
The aggressive and visually stimulating dance modernizes
moves indigenous to African tribal rituals and features
athletic movement sped up to impossible speeds.
Tommy Johnson (Tommy the Clown) first created the dance
style "Clowning" as a response to the 1992 Rodney King
riots. Another form of movement is showcased as the kids
do what they now call Krumping.
The group use dance as an alternative to gangs and
hustling by forming their own troupes and paint their faces
like warriors, meeting to outperform rival gangs of dancers
or just to hone their skills. For the dancers, Krumping
becomes a way of life as a part of hip-hop culture.
"I worked three years on this. I put my heart into this.
It really does feel like having a child. I am like ok. It
filled a big void and I have got to keep going You know and
doing something else. This film means a lot. It's a dance
film, Its not just trendy dance film. There is so much
heart in this film and you don't have to be into hip-hop to
love it," LaChapelle told Reuters at the premiere. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
