- Story Text: Brazilian revelers dressed in white and blue participated in a procession in the city of Bahia on Thursday (January 16) to honor Our Lord of Bonfim.
The "Lavagem do Bonfim" is Salvador's most traditional festival, celebrated on the second Thursday of January, blending Catholic faith with religious syncretism, where participants, mostly dressed in white, walk 8 km from the church "Conceição da Praia" to "Nosso Senhor do Bonfim" in a vibrant procession, according to the Culture Department of Bahia.
This event, over two centuries old, attracts thousands of devotees and tourists, featuring cultural performances and local foods along the route, culminating in the washing of the church steps and a final mass.
Dressed in a traditional Baiana costume, an unidentified reveller told Reuters she was marching, asking for peace.
The yearly tradition combines elements of Catholicism, the Afro-Brazilian religion of Candomble, and popular culture, offering a unique glimpse into the cultural richness and religious syncretism of Bahia.
